Obverse: Crowned, King Charles I on horseback riding left, holding upright sword. The horse is shown trampling military arms underfoot. Oxford plume of three feathers behind King. Text around CAROLVS D G MAG BRIT FRA ET HIBER REX, separated by colons.
Reverse: Three Oxford plumes above •XX• (denoting 20 shillings). Declaration across centre field between two lines and in two lines RELIG PROT LEG / ANG LIBER PAR. Around, a group of seven pellets followed by the text EXVRGAT DEVS DISSIPENTVR INIMICI, separated by colons (Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered).
History: During the Civil war the Tower Mint had come under the control of Parliament so other provincial mints including Oxford were operated in royalist areas under the King. The declaration on the reverse across the centre field is a shortened version that Charles made in Wellington in September 1642, in which he promised to uphold the Protestant Religion, the Laws of England, and the Liberty of Parliament.
