Obverse: Laureate head of Septimius Severus right. Text around SEVERVS AVG PART MAX.
Reverse: Septimius standing left, holding patera in right hand over tripod altar, & spear in left. Text around RESTITVTOR VRBIS.
History: The inscription and image on the reverse depicts Septimius Severus as having restored the honour of the "Eternal City" by avenging the death of Pertinax, secured domestic tranquillity to the empire by the destruction of his competitors Albinus and Niger, and making the Roman name again respected abroad by his victories over the Parthians.
