History: This gold coin was struck during the great siege of Athens in 296 BC from gold stripped from the statue of Athena in the Parthenon. They were issued by the tyrant Lachares to pay his troops during the siege of Athens by Demetrius 'the besieger'. Only a very few examples are known, making this coin excessively rare.
